On the left bank of the picturesque river Southern Bug, a kilometre east of the Zavalye village, there is a working open-cast mine with a depth of 250 meters where graphite ore is extracted. The Zavalye field is the pride of Ukraine because it is the largest in Europe and its almost perfect graphite is highly valued in the world market. Currently, the Zavalye graphite is exported to Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Japan, America, as well as to the countries of Western and Eastern Europe.

The Zavalye graphite is truly unique, because it has an almost perfect crystal structure and contains minimum impurities, the composition of which allows them to be easily removed from the ore. Due to the fact that in the weathering crust the graphite flakes are not integrown with other minerals (are open), these ores (the so-called soft ores) are still easier to beneficiate which makes them the primary object of industrial development.

The field was discovered in the early 20's of the last century. It is located in the densely populated central part of Ukraine. The total area of the field bordering with the Odesa and the Kirovohrad region, is about 50 km2. The main part of the Zavalye deposit and the production facilities are located in the Hayvoron district of the Kirovohrad region.

The deposit is being developed by open-pit mining. The extracted ore represents kaolinized gneisses, which, in addition to graphite, also contain: sillimanite, quartz, pyroxene, chloride, biotite and garnet. The sheet-like deposits of graphite-containing gneisses are ore streaks alternating with barren rocks. 5 ore streaks 1.0 to 80 m wide are distinguished. The average graphite content varies depending on the field section - from 6.7% to 10.1%. Due to the field, the Zavalyevskiy Plant producing graphite products is fully provided with graphite ores.

The explored and confirmed in-place graphite reserves are estimated at around 7.6 million tons, and graphite content in the ore is estimated at around 5-7 percent. The graphite in the ore has the form of large flakes, united into bands and needles of up to 4-6 millimeters, closely intergrown with other minerals and with each other.

The soft and hard ores of the deposit are beneficiated by flotation getting a concentrate which contains 86-97% high-quality graphite and up to 10-13% ash. According to the proved reserves and the production scale of graphite ore, this deposit is one of the largest in the former Soviet Union.

Today, Zavalyevskiy Graphite Ltd. produces more than 20 types of various grades of graphite and colloidal graphite products. The company is developing day by day, increasing its graphite production, improving its equipment and process technology, expanding the range of its products.
