Raw materials for the fuel cell in chemical power generators

Fuel cells in chemical power generators are converting chemical energy of a fuel into electricity, bypassing inefficient walking with heavy losses, combustion processes.

Carbon-based materials are exfoliated graphite intercalated most important element of the key components of the fuel cell power generators in chemical.

The bipolar plates (BPP) are a key component in chemical generators, and other power systems electrical fuel elements in electrochemical reactions.  BPP typically includes carbon composition in the form of expanded graphite (which in turn is produced from natural flake graphite).

It performs four main functions in the fuel cell stacks:

• The distribution of reactants residual gases and liquids.

• Current and accumulation of electrical transmission from the anode to the cathode.

• The mechanical support for the thin membrane-electrode elements.

• Distribution of unit cells in a part of BPP.

These functions correspond to the key substantive requirements for BPP, and betray the composition of  boards properties such as electrical conductivity in the plane and perpendicular to the plane of the plates, except that the thermal conductivity properties of the composition to achieve the cooling plates. Other functional requirements, which is achieved due to BPP expanded graphite, a mechanical stability to the integrity of the composition of the plates, hydrogen impermeability, corrosion resistance for long life, low cost of materials and the relative ease of manufacture. On the basis of expanded graphite bipolar plates meet or exceed most of these basic requirements.

For bipolar plates of graphite powder has its own requirements:

High conductivity (sequentially), a high degree of perfectness of crystal lattice and the achievement of high density when compressed, low anisotropy and rounded particle shape, high thermal conductivity (in-plane), durability (low corrosivity), high carbon purity (> 99,8% C ), good mechanical properties, easy handling of the compounds (low viscosity at high load), the optimized particle size distribution, particle shape universal.

Today the company produces only feedstock for subsequent post-treatment powders, graphite and exhaust already expanded graphite, which is most suitable for use in bipolar plates and fuel cell generators in chemical current. In the nearest future the company is present goal of installing additional equipment (grinding, classification of particles, their thermal expansion and laboratory control) to extend the range in the direction of high-quality European brands intercalated (IG) and thermally expanded natural graphite (TEG) for use in bipolar plates and fuel cells to chemical current generators.
